ECON 340/ENVA 300

This question will get us started using the blog, and is also meant to give just a little incentive to start thinking about the natural world in which you live. Provide a one paragraph answer, as a comment to this post, before our next class period; links are welcomed and encouraged. I will scroll through the comments during class.

I gave an example in class today of one way in which the environment provides value to me. In what very specific way does one aspect of the environment provide value to you?

  2. I've spent a lot of time hiking New York's 46 high peaks with my dad. Since my parents are divorced, those experiences provide most of the contact I have with him. Special thanks to the Appalachian Mountains
and the Bright Angel and Kaibab trails of the Grand Canyon for providing quality bonding time.

  3. I'm an avid skier, so the great ski resorts of the Catskills, Adirondacks, and Green Mountains have provided me countless hours of adrenaline rushes and incredible scenery.

  4. Hiking up at the Mohonk Mountain resort in New Paltz has been one of the few places that I know locally with such a beautiful countryside landscape. Hiking up there really makes me appreciate my surroundings, and helps remind me why it is so important to leave as little of an impact that I can on the environment.

  6. I have been privileged enough to have had the ability to travel much of Europe. Two of the most memorable experiences for me were hiking in the Alps in Switzerland and the spectacular views of the Black Forest in Germany, where much of my family's heritage is derived.

  7. Studying abroad in Tanzania allowed me to go on an African safari for over a month. This experience has reinforced my love for the outdoors. As our airplane flew next to Mt. Kilimanjaro above the clouds was one of the most breath-taking experiences of my life. (Yes, the ice cap seems to be very small compared with pictures from a few years ago.) While on safari one night, out car was surrounded by hundreds of wildebeest, zebras, cape buffalo, and elephants coming back from teh watering hole. The image was awesome. (I have some photos if anyone wants to see but it does not give that moment justice.)

  8. Since I was a little girl my family and I have spent time in the Adirondacks. We stay there for most of the summer, and go at least once every season. My favorite season to go and hike with my family is Fall. Once I am on top of mountains like Blue, Bald, and even little Rocky Point, I really am able to take a step back from everything, and appreciate nature. The trees with their beautiful multi colored leaves surrounding the lakes is breath taking.

  9. Every summer I have worked at my Aunt's Lobster house in York Beach Maine. It is situated on a nubble of rocks overlooking the ocean. The Maine coast is known for its delicious lobsters and people come from all over the country and world to taste the lobsters and see the scenery. In this case the environment has brought me into the realm of ecotourism, which has helped me to put myself through college. However, the Maine coast has provided much more than simple monetary gain as I have acquired a "locals" appreciation for the delicate ecosystem. One can still go on a bike ride and find an unexplored beach or take a kayak ride and discover the treasures found only during low tide.

  11. Growing up on Long Island's south shore, I've always held a great appreciation for our spectacular beaches, but unfortunately have witnessed their gradual erosion over the years. I've also experienced the rich and foggy mountains of Ecuador, the diverse island of Margarita in Venezuela, and the breathtaking mountain views from Japanese temples (including Mount Fugi) and shores of Japan. Words can't describe the feelings I experienced from Japan's beauty, especially.

  12. Growing up in the Catskill Mountain region has allowed me to develop a very deep love for the outdoors and nature. Instead of living in the hustle of a city where everyone lives right next to each other, living in the country allows one to really apreciate nature and the environment that you live in. I hope that this class will lead to a better understanding about what I can do to help preserve the small places that are still called wilderness.

  14. Spending time in the woods is one of my favorite activities. Running on trails through the woods provides a great escape from the chaos of life and time to just be alone and think. When walking through the woods, I am always amazed at the abundance of life. I love to just take some time to sit and listen to all that is happening around me.

  15. Living in this part of the country gives you the best of both worlds. I enjoy the beaches in the summer as well as the mountains in the winter. I’m not much of a skier, but the scenery is great. I find it relaxing to run along the beach in the summer. I also enjoy playing baseball in the nice weather. Not many places in the world enjoy the four season like we do. Hopefully, society will take action and help preserve the environment.

  16. Living in NH with the woods right behind my house has given me many opportunities to explore the outdoors as well as increased my appreciation of the natural environment. Being able to snowshoe into the woods and within 2 minutes escaping any evidence of human life is probably one of the things I find to be most valuable in nature.

  17. Well I've traveled more than half the country from coast to coast and lived in more than 4 states and can honestly say that changes in scenery from place to place is absolutely amazing. I love camping (like tenting), canoing, and fishing throughout the Adirondacks and the rest of the country and I can honestly say its the most rewarding and relaxing experience. I find that being able to be a part of nature is very stress relieving and reminds me of how precious it is and how if we don't shape up we or future generations may never get to experience the environment at its finest.

  18. What I value the most about nature is its ability to make everything slow down. I feel like whenever I am outdoors, I am finally able to breath and I can take time to appreciate my surroundings. I can just clear my head and reflect on things because there is no dead-line that I need to worry about. Nothing to rush around about. It's just time to relax.

  21. While I am a huge fan of the environment, I am not really so big on hiking/camping/activities that require athletic ability. I like having things like clean air and water and want other species and future generations to have these things as well. I am also rather fond of the ridiculous number of flower gardens my parents have planted at our house--the butterflies like to come check out the flowers, and if you wait for long enough, you get to see the hummingbirds.

  22. Having just got back from Costa Rica on a cultural study the nature part of the environment is something of high value. After hiking and sightseeing, the birds, animals, mammals, waterfalls and views are all pieces that fit into the environment to make it of value.
